Little Darlings Review by Award winning author Aleesah Darlison Utterly delightful endpapers frame an uplifting and vibrant story about one of Australia’s most picturesque, beloved beachside towns: Shellharbour in NSW. Two children, Lani and Oli, journey around the region, sampling the many delights the area has to offer. The brainchild and labour of love of children’s author, Karen Hendriks, the book was also published by Hendriks under her imprint, Little Shell Books. Our Shellharbour is a testament to Hendriks’s talent, foresight, nous, and her passion for her hometown, the natural environment, and the humans and animals who inhabit it. No doubt, this story has brought the community of Shellharbour together in real life just as it has been brought together within the book’s pages. Sturt’s illustrations are cool and inviting, almost every page is awash with pastel greens and blues that mirror the waters around Shellharbour. 17/3/24 |

I recently attended the CBCA Illawarra/South Coast literary luncheon in October, 2023 at the Fraternity Club, Fairy Meadow. Seventeen schools participated, I lunched with the wonderful teachers and students from Gerringong Public School. Together we wrote a group story and participated in author trivia by yelling out our answers. It was super loud. I loved chatting, signing autographs and sharing the proof copy for our Shellharbour. I even went to university with one of the teachers from Gerringong Public School. My favourite moment was when one of the student’s on my table gave me the biggest bear hug at the end of the day. And then when they were leaving ran back and gave me another tight squeeze. It melted my heart and that is what author’s love more than anything else connecting with children over story.
